What is a surgical injury claim?
If you have had surgery and suffered an injury, pain and discomfort or serious long lasting health problems as a result of mistakes made during a procedure, you may be able to bring a claim for medical negligence.
Common areas of surgical injury
Before Surgery:
- failure to obtain a patient’s proper consent. Save for emergency situations all doctors should discuss with the patient the risks and complications of the procedure and obtain a patient’s agreement to go ahead with the surgery
During surgery:
- Operating in the wrong place/on the wrong limb
- Performing the wrong procedure
- Damaging organs, blood vessels or nerves
- Failing to notice damage to organs, vessels or nerves
After Surgery:
- Failure to diagnose and treat developing complications such as,sepsis/infection, bowel obstruction, perforated bowel and compartment syndrome
