World Patient Safety Day is held annually on September 17th and aims to reminds us how important it is to keep patients safe in healthcare systems around the world.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) started this day in 2019 to raise awareness and encourage global action to improve patient safety and reduce harm in healthcare.
The theme for World Patient Safety Day 2024 is “Improving diagnosis for patient safety” with the slogan “Get it right, make it safe!”. This highlights how crucial it is to diagnose health problems correctly and quickly to ensure patient safety and better health outcomes.
A diagnosis identifies what health problem a patient has and is key to getting the right care and treatment. A diagnostic error happens when there is a failure to correctly and promptly identify a patient’s health problem. This can include delayed, incorrect, or missed diagnoses, or not communicating the diagnosis to the patient.
Patient safety involves practices to prevent errors and harm, such as accurate diagnosis, effective treatment protocols, and strong systems for reporting and learning from mistakes
Despite these efforts, medical negligence remains a serious concern. Negligence in healthcare, whether due to misdiagnosis, medication errors, or inadequate procedures, can have serious and lasting effects on patients’ lives.
At Davies and Partners, we believe that addressing medical negligence requires a comprehensive approach. This means improving healthcare practices and systems and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability. Healthcare organisations must prioritise continuous training and support for their staff, implement strict safety protocols, and encourage open communication to address errors constructively.
On World Patient Safety Day, we are reminded that every patient deserves to be safe and that every healthcare professional has a role in making this a reality. We celebrate those who commit to these principles and work towards building a safer, more effective healthcare system for all.
