Investigations into death of 650 patients treated by jailed breast surgeon Ian Paterson

Ian Paterson, disgraced consultant breast surgeon was convicted and jailed in 2017 and is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of 17 counts of wounding with intent.

The Sunday Times has reported that the deaths of 650 patients treated by Ian Paterson are now being investigated with a team of medical experts having been appointed to review the patients’ medical records. The team will focus on cases involving the unapproved technique of ‘cleavage-sparing’ mastectomies invented by Mr Paterson with the investigation being led by deputy high court judge Richard Foster.

The Sunday Times revealed that 27 inquests have already been opened where the coroners “believe there is evidence to have reason to suspect that that some of those deaths may be unnatural”.
